CRANFIELD MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT LTD ( Freelancing )
Consulting re:
Performance Tuning
Configuration Management
I designed and implemented an enhancement to the CFACS accounts package which
enabled a system manager to administer the configuration and generation of complex
views on the CFACS Accounting package tables. I undertook the design of the database
schema and forms. I also spent time prototyping and performance testing of key SQL
statements using Oracle's explain plan tool. I delivered optimum performing software
in good time along with User and Technical documentation including an entity model
for the schema. The project involved using SQLFORMS and PRO-C. The software is crucial
to the successful implementation of their accounting system. The software that I
produced is now sold along with other components of the CFACS Accounting system.
I was commissioned to write a C program used to calculate cash flow for reinsurance
companies. The analysis of the project involved the translation of certain statistical
formulae into C code. The program also has a graphics module which displays and
prints a graph using low level graphics routines.
I have been hired to do some DBA training and Database administration tasks for
Cranfield Institute of Technology on a number of occasions.
ORACLE V6, V5, SQLFORMS 2.3, 3.0 & PRO-C & C
Devised template forms and user exits which became the company standards.
Developed an in house quotation system.
Devised many reusable core modules for the CFACS Accounts system.
Tested and evaluated several Forms 2.3 to 3 conversion tools.
Involved in Analysis and programming many of the CFACS modules.
General Ledger Sales, Purchase Ledger, Sales Order Purchasing
AWK, LEX & YACC, C/BOURNE & KORN SHELLS
Devised custom conversion routines to make bulk changes to programs.
My conversion routines have saved many man hours .
They were particularly useful during porting where small but
widespread changes were effected quickly and reliably.
SQLDBA
Responsible for DBA activities for many of our clients as well
as CEDARDATA.
DECNET/VAX & TCP/IP, PCSA/PATHWORKS & COMMUNICATIONS TOOLS
Telnet, UUCP, kermit, zmodem, PCAnywhere, modem configuration,
compression and decompression tools. I configured and
supported various networks both within CEDARDATA and for
clients.
CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT
Devised coding standards and naming conventions.
Developed portable installation procedures built around the MAKE utility.
Responsible for the first Unix and MSDOS ports and a port to
Data General AOS.
My many successful ports of the CFACS package arose from my
ability to become familiar with unknown systems and to solve
problems quickly.
Devised in house SQL reports to aid configuration management.
Devised an entity model for our Support system.
Adept at understanding and debugging unfamiliar code.
COURSES ATTENDED

Analysis and Programming bespoke applications including:
A pension administration system for The Press Association.
A shipping registry for Seacontainers LTD.
A Back Office system for an Inter Dealer Broker in the City.
A demonstration application for Ashton Tate.
PARADOX
Programming and Consultancy for United Distillers
NOVELL NETWORK
Installation, Configuration and Support for various clients in
the City, both hardware and software.
I designed and configured the details of the Crownpark Training
Centre network.
DBASE II
Designed a suite of 40 programs and a menu system to provide
Data Entry and Reports. The reports were designed in liaison
with the Company Accountant and the Technical & Claims
managers. Input data was from a daily printout from PSAC and
the reports were used to verify the reliability of a mainframe
system, which was often found to be incorrect. My system
became a vital part of the company's operation and I was
re-employed on a consultancy basis when the company was taken
over.
